Ericsson and Telstra establishes Center of Excellence for Programmable Networks
- The Center of Excellence for Programmable Networks aims to jointly develop and execute trials for SDN and NFV driven use cases and solutions
- Telstra and Ericsson to trial the virtual Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for the Telstra Mobile core network
- Virtual Enterprise Gateway trial recently concluded
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Telstra have jointly established a Center of Excellence for Programmable Networks (CoE) to accelerate the commercial deployment of Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) driven use cases and solutions. The Center plans to do this by joint development of proof of concepts and execution of trials for applications of programmable networks. The scope of the Center's activities also includes the associated network management and orchestration systems.

A key task for the CoE is to test the adoption of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in the mobile core network. As a part of this activity, Telstra and Ericsson have signed a trial agreement to test and verify Ericsson's virtual Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for the Telstra Mobile network.
The virtual EPC trial targets verification of the technology and architecture, and will assist Telstra in planning to realize the benefits of NFV, including increased network flexibility, time to market, and operability with the existing Telstra Mobile network. The solution will provide greater network agility, flexibility, and create cost efficiencies in order for Telstra to deploy capability and capacity with speed wherever it is required to deliver superior network performance to its customers. The trial will conclude in September 2015.
Learnings from the joint trials will serve as input to ongoing SDN and NFV engagements with global tier 1 operators and standardization activities.
Håkan Eriksson, Head of Ericsson Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, says: "The migration to SDN and NFV enabled solutions will enable Telstra to be much more agile in meeting and exceeding their customers' expectations. We expect the collaboration with Telstra to significantly reduce the time lag from innovation to deploying commercial products."
A recently completed initiative under the Center of Excellence for Programmable Networks is the trial for the Virtual Enterprise Gateway solution. The Virtual Enterprise Gateway enables service providers to bundle network connectivity solutions with cloud based network services and productivity applications to offer a one-stop enterprise IT solution.
As part of the evolution of the Virtual Enterprise Gateway initiative, IT administrators will have an unprecedented level of control and flexibility, including on demand instantiation of cloud network services and offering personalized services to the enterprise users. The introduction of Ericsson Cloud Manager into the solution will power these new features.
