Ericsson awards Compaq global outsourcing contract Ericsson has signed a contract to outsource IT Service and Support to Compaq. The agreement, which takes effect immediately, covers 20,000 end- users in Ericsson's Swedish-based companies. This initial contract is valued at more than USD 150 million (SEK 1.3 billion) over a five-year period. Ericsson estimates that the agreement will save the company more than USD 11.5 million (SEK 100 million) annually in IT-related costs. The memorandum of understanding concerning desktop infrastructure support signed by Ericsson and Compaq in Dec 1999 has now resulted in an outsourcing contract. The contract, which is in keeping with Ericsson's strategy to concentrate on core business, is part of an early phase of global implementation. This initial contract includes the transfer of 170 employees from Ericsson to Compaq. Under the agreement, Compaq will be responsible for technology refresh, server management, help-desk and desk-side support, maintenance, and implementation services. "The agreement with Compaq is an important link in Ericsson's IT standardization agenda," said Håkan Liedman, Ericsson's Chief Information Officer. "Customers demand easy access to Ericsson and to our services. Flexibility in a truly global organization requires standardization of the IT platform." A technology refresh program will be executed during the first year of the contract. Under this program, Compaq will replace approximately 16,000 PCs for Ericsson. "Today's outsourcing business is all about credibility, combining hardware and services and of being truly global. These are key attributes of Compaq, whose 28,000 service professionals worldwide are dedicated to delivering best-in-class consulting and outsourcing services to the leading international players in their fields, such as Ericsson," says Jeff Lynn, Vice President and General Manager, Professional Services, Compaq Corporation.
