Ericsson brings its well-proven MD110 PBX into the IP world Ideal solution for companies with several small offices and remote workers Ericsson's new release of the MD110 enterprise communication system makes it possible for your company to have fully-integrated IP telephony and PC phones by directing the flow of communications through the company's local area network (LAN). This new version of the MD110 introduces an integrated gatekeeper functionality into the MD110 network. For calls between IP phones or PC clients, the media stream is switched directly on the LAN, whilst offering access to MD110 telephony features. The new MD110 is the perfect solution for enterprises with several small offices and companies where some employees work from home. With their phones or PCs connected to the company's LAN, users are integrated with the rest of the organization. Remote users then have cost-efficient access to all system features as well as the possibility (depending on network capacity) of participating, for instance, in video conferences with excellent picture quality without speech delay. "Our aim is to use IP-technology where it complements our systems. This gives mobility a totally new dimension as we pick out the best from both telephony and computer technology," says Thomas Näsström, Vice President, Product Unit Medium and Large Communications Systems, Ericsson Enterprise Systems. Those who simply want to use their PCs to communicate with the company can use any IP-client (phones/PC-applications) complying with the ITU standard H.323 v. 2. The new MD110 release will be available on selected markets during autumn 2000 and generally available at the beginning of next year. This coming release is a major step in bringing IP-technology into the MD110. Future steps will continue to bring customer value with IP- technology and mobility to the MD110. Better Mobility Ericsson has also improved the integrated mobility of the MD110 by enabling SMS services to be connected to DECT telephones via the Internet. This application will primarily be used by organizations that need to alert teams at short notice, for example, in medical or industrial emergencies. Ericsson's MD110 PBX is a communication system for medium and large enterprises. The MD110 is characterized by its modularity and flexibility that makes it possible, within the framework of the basic system, to meet varying requirements regarding size, function contents, software security, traffic capacity and physical placing, using geographically dispersed units. Its unique upgrading system means that every system installed since 1983 can be upgraded. The MD110 has a market share of 20 percent in Europe and has been installed in over 70 countries worldwide.
