Ericsson builds China's first national IP backbone network for China Mobile Today, Ericsson announced that it has signed a contract to supply equipment for China's first national IP backbone network. The network, when completed in October this year, will enable China Mobile Communications Corporation (China Mobile) to provide a carrier-class IP backbone network services for the whole country. This is the largest IP backbone network in which Ericsson has been involved. The new contract has further fortified Ericsson's position as a leader in the mobile communications infrastructure market. Presently, the IP backbone network will provide connectivity for Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) access. By the end of this year, it will also serve as a transmission network for GPRS. Eventually, the system will deliver voice, data and multimedia for the third-generation of mobile communications. According to the contract, Ericsson will provide China Mobile with AXI 580 IP Core Routers for the network's core nodes and AXI 520 IP Core Routers for other nodes. The AXI 580 IP Core Router is a large-scale platform supporting line interfaces up to OC-192c/STM-64 (10 Gbps), and the AXI 520 IP Core Router is a smaller platform which supports line interfaces up to OC-48/STM-16 (2.5 Gbps). Michael D. Ricks, President of Ericsson (China) Company Limited, said, "We are very pleased to be winning this business in such a competitive situation. It demonstrates the speed with which China Mobile is moving towards the Mobile Internet and Ericsson's strong position as a partner in this transition. I am confident that our expertise, our products and our service will prove to be a major asset for China Mobile in this business." In August, Ericsson was chosen by Cable & Wireless Hong Kong Telecom to supply AXI 520 for the company's fixed broadband Internet business, which enables Cable & Wireless HKT's Powerb@se data centers to connect customer servers to the Internet with wire-speed gigabit performance. Ericsson is the leading communications supplier, combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating the new era of Mobile Internet. Ericsson provides total solutions covering everything from systems and applications to mobile phones and other communications tools. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for customers all over the world. About Ericsson in China In China, Ericsson has nearly 4,000 employees with 24 offices, 10 joint ventures and three wholly owned companies providing a full range of communications solutions and services to the China market. About Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) is an Internet-class, carrier-class data backbone and a key component to both wireless and wireline operators' transitions to next generation networks. PBN enables operators to offer new or expanded services over an IP infrastructure in an extremely reliable and ultra-scalable configuration. PBN is based on the following hardware platforms from Ericsson: the AXI 580 and AXI 520 IP Backbone Routers, AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router and AXD 301 High-Performance ATM Switch. PBN includes a Multiservice Management Suite (MMS) of products that includes in-house developed tools optimized for next generation networks and tools from best-in-class partners to address management issues in four key areas: network provisioning, service provisioning, service and network assurance, customer care and billing. PBN also employs Ericsson's innovative range of robust DWDM optical networking products: ERIcsson Optical Networking (ERION). ------------------------------------------------------------ This information was brought to you by BIT http://www.bit.se The following files are available for download: http://www.bit.se/bitonline/2000/09/14/20000914BIT00890/bit0001.doc http://www.bit.se/bitonline/2000/09/14/20000914BIT00890/bit0002.pdf
