Ericsson chosen by Telefónica S.A. to increase the capacity of transport network

[REMOVED GRAPHICS] Press Release 1 Dec 1998 Ericsson chosen by Telefónica S.A. to increase the capacity of transport network Ericsson has been chosen by Telefónica S.A. to expand the company's existing network capacity. The solution is based on DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology, which uses optical signals with different wavelengths in order to increase the capacity of the optical fibre. One year ago the Ericsson DWDM platform, which is called Ericsson Optical Networking (ERION ), signed the first contract for the supply of an optical networking system with Telecom Finland, now Sonera. It was one of the first DWDM technology installations in Europe. Telefónica has chosen an expandable 16-32 channel system - called ERION Networker - with applications including "point-to-point" and "self-healing rings". "Ericsson's DWDM technology offers significant advantages: it supports all kind of traffic and it offers security, making it possible to design solutions which closely maps each customer's needs. Ericsson's DWDM solutions allows operators to maximise the performance of SDH and PDH systems and constitute an excellent platform for ATM and IP interconnection," said Carl-Magnus Hallberg, DWDM Programme Director, Ericsson BU Transport & Cable Networks.
