Ericsson’s vision is based on open standards, a driver behind the company’s leading role in standardization through all generations of mobile technology – from 1G to 3G. The successful combination of consistently driving innovation and standardization is reflected in a leading market share around 40 percent in both 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA/UMTS).

“Open standards are truly key to the growth of the mobile market,” says Torbjörn Nilsson, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Strategic Business Development at Ericsson. “We need interoperable applications, phones and other devices, but equally important are global network standards as the basic enabler to communicate voice, data, video and pictures to everyone, everywhere. Through OMA we will continue our long-term commitment to achieve interoperable end to end solutions, which can now be promoted even more concerted.”

Ericsson is the single largest contributor of the new technologies involved in mobile communications, with more than 10 000 granted patents worldwide. Ericsson holds 30-40 percent of the essential patents behind WCDMA (UMTS) as well as the largest share in GSM and Bluetooth.

We remain the only vendor to work with all major mobile technology standards including terminals as well as systems.
