Ericsson delivers WAP system to Rogers Cantel Ericsson announces trials for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology over a TDMA network with Rogers Cantel, Canada's largest wireless provider. This makes Ericsson the first supplier in the industry to deliver a WAP 1.1 system to a TDMA operator. The delivery also demonstrates Rogers Cantel's commitment to providing customers with wireless Internet services over its PCS network. "We are continually expanding and enhancing our nationwide Cantel AT&T Digital PCS network to satisfy the tremendous demand for wireless services. We view the emergence of new wireless Internet applications and WAP technology as a tremendously exciting opportunity for our customers," says Bob Berner, Chief Technology Officer of Rogers Cantel Inc. "Ericsson's software, hardware and services have been an integral part of our success to date, and Rogers Cantel and Ericsson are working together to provide next generation wireless products and services for Canadians," Berner continues. The WAP system being delivered is based on the highly scaleable, fault TM tolerant JAMBALA platform. The JAMBALA WAP Gateway is especially targeted at TDMA and cdmaOne operators globally, and is together with a range of WAP applications. The system has been fully tested with terminals from major vendors. "Rogers Cantel is one of the leading TDMA operators in North America," says Glen Schmid, Director, WAP - America's, Ericsson Research Canada. "When such an operator chooses Ericsson, it's clear proof that our WAP portfolio offers superior functionality, quality, and scalability." Ericsson has already delivered more than 40 WAP 1.1 compliant systems to cdmaOne and GSM operators on several continents. Ericsson also scored an industry first when it showed the industry's first two WAP infrastructure products in October 1998, see: http://www.ericsson.com/pressroom/Archive/1998Q4/19981007-0012.html Ericsson -- founder of WAP -- is a main driver of the WAP technology. The company's innovations in the WAP area fully follow the true WAP standard, the WAP 1.1 specifications, which guarantees interoperability and backward compatibility of future WAP specification releases. Ericsson offers the widest range of WAP solutions, including WAP terminals and phones, WAP Gateways, WAP Developers Kit, WAP applications, WAP application consultancy as well as WAP portals. Ericsson is also first to market with the first ever WAP 1.1 compliant devices - the MC218, the first ever WAP 1.1 compliant developers kit, as well as the first-ever WAP 1.1 compliant gateway. Ericsson has also revealed two more WAP 1.1 compliant devices - the phone R320 and the smartphone R380. WAP is a first step towards Mobile Internet and 3G (third generation) mobile offerings. Mobile Internet will not only make the current Internet content available from mobile terminals, but also create a whole new set of services that will be available anywhere, anytime for users.
