Ericsson ENGINE chosen by eircom in Ireland Ericsson's ENGINE solution for next generation networks, based on its scalable ATM switch, AXD 301, has been chosen by operator eircom for their network modernization program. The ENGINE solution is an important step to efficiently combine Irish operator eircom's voice and datacom services into an integrated multi-service network. The agreement includes delivery of the latest high-capacity AXE switches and ENGINE media gateways, based on Ericsson's scalable ATM switch AXD 301. With this solution eircom will be well placed to meet the future demand for broadband capacity. The ENGINE solution will be implemented in eircom's national network. The ENGINE solution will allow eircom to provide telecom-grade services, including efficient transport of datacom services, voice over ATM, and multimedia services over an integrated multi-service network. The ENGINE network is capable of carrying large and growing volumes of voice and data traffic, as well as meeting increasing network interconnection requirements in the de-regulated and competitive environment in Ireland. Ericsson will also deliver its ENGINE Access Ramp, a newly launched multi- service access solution that efficiently handles both voice and datacom services. In January 1999 Ericsson was the world's first vendor to receive a substantial order for a circuit-to-packet transition solution, for BT's national UK network. Since then, Ericsson has received a number of orders for ENGINE solutions, including contracts with Telefónica, Diginet Americas, KPN International and Telia Denmark. Ericsson has also won a number of contracts for other next generation network solutions. Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecom world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over. With its ENGINE family of products, Ericsson has created a powerful, data- enabled, multi-service network offering. The ENGINE concept efficiently transitions operators' current circuit-switched networks into an integrated next generation wireline network, based on ATM and IP packet switching technologies. The ENGINE network combines Ericsson's versatile AXE switching system and highly scalable AXD 301 ATM switch with media gateways and management applications to meet a variety of service and business requirements for today's operators. The technologies used in this architecture, and the architecture itself, are fully optimized to achieve lowest possible operational costs, and greatest possible revenue opportunities for operators.
