Ericsson ENGINE chosen by Tele1 Europe Tele1 Europe (TEUR), the pan-Nordic data and telecommunications group, has chosen Ericsson's multi-service network solution, ENGINE, to expand its network in the Nordic region. The solution gives Tele1 Europe a fast and cost effective deployment of carrier-class communications. Ericsson's ENGINE solution will make it possible for Tele1 Europe to provide its Nordic corporate customers with new, innovative, bundled services at lower cost by using technology converging the world of voice and data networks. In the first step of the agreement, Ericsson will deliver two Telephony Servers, one in Sweden and one in Norway, and four Media Gateways. The Telephony Servers will handle the call control, while the Media Gateways, based on Ericsson's AXD 301 switch, will handle interconnections between operators throughout the Nordic countries. "Ericsson's ENGINE solution provides a highly cost-effective way for Tele1 Europe, in the future, to migrate our circuit-switched network to a packet-based network," says Tommy Ekström, Chief Technical Officer at Tele1 Europe. "We can also integrate Ericsson's ENGINE Access Ramp (DSL) and UMTS platforms in the future. Ericsson is supporting our speed-to- market initiatives while we provide our customers with high-quality, affordable, tailored business solutions." The future-proof equipment enables Tele1 Europe to provide both fixed and variable transmission rates now and in the future. This flexibility is important both for fixed networks and for future wireless mobile services. Ericsson's ENGINE solution will be used for transmitting data - comprising full voice services and various kinds of data signals - and making use of the flexibility and versatility that is the trademark of ENGINE networks. Ericsson is the leading communications supplier, combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating the new era of mobile Internet. Ericsson provides total solutions covering everything from systems and applications to mobile phones and other communications tools. The group's business concept is to offer broadband solutions for data, telephony and the Internet to large and medium-sized business and organizations in the Nordic countries. Tele1 Europe is currently the only Nordic data and telecommunications operator investing in local access networks with broadband capacity. This construction is taking place in the nine largest Nordic cities. The access networks, which are linked together with a long-distance network, will be Europe's fastest "motorway" for data and Internet traffic with an initial capacity for customers of up to one gigabyte. In January 1999 Ericsson was the world's first vendor to receive a substantial order for a next-generation network circuit-to-packet migration solution for British Telecom's national network. In February 2000, Ericsson also became the first supplier in February 2000 to announce live service on a circuit-to- packet network following its agreement and deployment with Telefónica in Spain. Ericsson has received a number of orders for solutions based on the same concept, including contracts with KPN International Network Services, Telia Denmark, eircom and Diveo (formerly Diginet Americas). Ericsson's vision for future networks is a new type of robust, multi- service network infrastructure based on new packet-switching technologies designed for real-time services; a network able to carry large and growing volumes of bit traffic, and to cope with the interconnection requirements of deregulated and competitive telecom environments. Ericsson has created ENGINE a powerful, data-enabled, multi-service network offering. The technologies used in this architecture - and the structure itself - are fully optimized to achieve the lowest operational costs, bringing the highest possible revenue opportunities for operators.
