Ericsson ENGINE selected for multi-service network in Chile Ericsson's ENGINE solution, a multi-service next generation network offering, has been chosen by Chilean operator Telsur. The Ericsson ENGINE solution will enable Telsur to deploy a powerful, data-enabled national IP value-added network to provide telecom-grade services, such as efficient data transport, voice over IP, digital TV and video, and multimedia services. Ericsson will provide all systems integration and other professional services including third party network elements and best-of-breed management systems. As part of the strategic agreement, Ericsson also will provide joint-marketing support to develop new IP broadband and interactive multimedia services to Telsur customers. The ENGINE solution for Telsur is comprised of Ericsson's robust Packet Backbone Network and broadband access technology. It combines Ericsson's scalable ATM switch, AXD 301; edge aggregation router, AXI 540; xDSL integrated broadband access solution, ENGINE Access Ramp, and SDH transport network solutions. The terms of the strategic agreement also include a partnership between Ericsson and Telsur to deploy new cellular wideband service opportunities, upon opening of new licenses for frequencies in Chile. The ENGINE solution also includes an integrated business support system, which allows Telsur to extend into a variety of ISP offerings such as web hosting, interactive gaming, and other value added services The ENGINE network is capable of carrying large and growing volumes of voice, data traffic and image, as well as meeting the increasing network interconnection requirements in highly de-regulated and competitive environments such as Chile. Telsur is deploying the new ENGINE multi- service network in the main cities of the country. In January 1999 Ericsson was the world's first vendor to receive a substantial order for a next generation network, circuit-to-packet transition solution for BT's national network. Since then, Ericsson has received a number of additional orders for solutions based on its ENGINE concept as well as for other next generation network solutions.
