Ericsson expands broadband access portfolio

Ericsson has expanded its broadband access offering to the significant Fiber To The Node (FTTN) market through an agreement with Canadian-based Critical Telecom. By integrating Critical Telecom's outside plant remote Ethernet DSLAM into Ericsson's Public Ethernet portfolio, Ericsson can support operators deliver such services as IPTV.
The emerging need for multiple television streams, High Definition Television (HDTV), in combination with enhanced high-speed Internet service offerings requires that access nodes be deployed closer to the end users. As a result, FTTN solutions must be purpose-built to stand up to both environmental conditions and the need for greater throughput and bandwidth.

"The emerging opportunity in the access network is significant and immediate as carriers look to capitalize on the demand for high-bandwidth services," said Karl Thedeen, Head of Product Area Wireline, Ericsson.  "Ericsson's agreement with Critical Telecom makes our portfolio stronger because the purpose-built Ethernet DSLAM product, GEmini, addresses outside-plant deployment scenarios as well."

"To be able to deliver new-generation services cost-effectively, the migration to a platform based on Gigabit Ethernet and IP is a market given," said Teresa D. Mastrangelo, Program Director Broadband Networks Strategies, RHK. "With the new Ericsson partnership, carriers will receive a complete broadband access solution that will secure the roll-out of FTTN solutions, which will enable higher bandwidth to the end users."

Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution is the most widely deployed IP/Ethernet DSLAM with more than 60 contracts around the world and more than two years of commercial network deployment.
