Ericsson expands in high-performance Wireless LAN solutions The WLAN 'Hot Spot' solution by Ericsson provides users with access to their Intranet from hot spots, enabled by a combination of Wireless LAN products, routers and switches from Ericsson. Today at the NetWorld+Interop exhibition in Atlanta, Ericsson launched a new Wireless LAN solution, WLAN Hot Spot' solution, which gives users remote high- speed datacom access to their corporate LAN as if connected in the office. From hot spots, such as airports, train stations, hotels, conference centers etc., users can get fast and secure connections to Internet and Intranet applications which can be selected when logging on to the service. Ericsson continues to focus on security by incorporating the Ericsson WLAN Guard into the offer, enabling authentication of the user and thereafter an encrypted connection. Technology The technology behind this new solution is essentially the same as for dial-up access using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) with layer 2 tunneling and RADIUS-based authentication. The encrypted IP-sec tunnel using either public or pre-shared keys guarantees strong security over the air interface. Basic encryption is 64 bit, which can be extended up to 448 bits, as the customer requires. The router adds high value to the system as it connects the user to the corporate LAN via an Internet Service Provider (ISP), or as an alternative the user may select to get direct access to the Internet through the ISP. Depending on the preferred network topology switches can also be implemented in the offer. Ericsson Wireless LAN portfolio The new Ericsson wireless LAN product portfolio consists of IEEE 802.11 compliant Ericsson WLAN Card C3, Ericsson WLAN Access Point A3 and the unique security solution Ericsson WLAN Guard. Using the Ericsson Access Router AXI 510 solves the Internet and wide area connectivity together with the PPP- tunneling functionality. Additional switches/routers from Ericsson like the Danube can also be part of the solution depending on actual network topology. Ericsson's Wireless LAN products operate in the license free 2.4 GHz ISM band, and use a Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum radio technique, FHSS, allowing quick and easy, smoothly scalable installations. "In the new professional environment where flexibility is an essential factor, a high-performance and competitive solution like this is of great value," says Martin Johnsson, Product Manager at Wireless LAN Systems at Ericsson. "The long experience that Ericsson has with security requirements is now brought into the corporate datacom world. We are in the forefront of a very interesting evolution path in the Wireless LAN market." The Ericsson WLAN 'Hot Spot' solution, together with the Wireless LAN High Security solution, is demonstrated in the Ericsson booth # 4034, Hall D at the NetWorld+Interop exhibition, Sept 13th -17th , Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, US.
