Ericsson leads global discussion on LTE Broadcast at Mobile World Congress 2016
- Leading mobile operators, content providers and device manufacturers will collaborate on a cross-sector strategy to drive LTE Broadcast adoption and delivery
- Telstra, GSA and the GSMA are among the companies participating in the second meeting of the MWC Ericsson / GSMA LTE Broadcast Forum
- Discussions will center on addressing the rapid increase in video traffic and deployment of LTE Broadcast in new use cases
At GSMA Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) will join leading mobile operators, content providers and device manufacturers at the second meeting of the MWC Ericsson / GSMA LTE Broadcast Forum. The meeting, hosted by Ericsson, will act as an exchange of ideas from the world's leading technology companies to support LTE Broadcast adoption and delivery. The group will collaborate on a cross-sector agenda for the coming year, identifying key areas and actions to build on the current momentum and further advance LTE Broadcast adoption.
With video forecast to make up 70 percent of all mobile data traffic in 2021, investment in LTE Broadcast is critical to ensuring that providers can continue to deliver high quality video services in the future. LTE Broadcast is the most efficient way to deliver content to end-users, reducing network pressures and supporting continued growth across the media sector.
In addition to addressing rising video demand, the group will discuss how LTE Broadcast can be best applied to new use cases, within and beyond the media sector. This includes breaking news, disaster relief, education, live events and health applications, as well as software app and firmware updates.
David Hutton, Head of Networks, GSMA, commented: "With traffic pressures increasing, it is incredibly important for the industry to engage in sharing best practices for mobile video delivery. However, the benefits of LTE Broadcast extend well beyond meeting demand. There is huge potential for content providers to widen the range of video services they are currently delivering, bringing significant revenue generation to multiple industry sectors."
Alan Hadden, GSA, says: "The rise in consumer demand for video across mobile devices is driving the need for better, faster systems of content delivery. Mobile providers should consider how LTE Broadcast can help increase cost savings, while also extending the quality of the service that is offered to consumers across multiple devices. To support this progress the GSA is focused on creating the right circumstances for adoption, including having clear objectives for moving forward."
Elisabetta Romano, VP and Head of TV and Media, Ericsson, says: "In 2012, Ericsson delivered the first live demonstration of LTE Broadcast during Mobile World Congress. Four years later we are hosting global leaders in a discussion to advance the adoption of this revolutionary video technology, demonstrating its commercial viability and continued potential for growth. LTE Broadcast is already servicing different industry segments, enabling content providers to deliver more seamless and immersive media experiences for consumers across every device."
The MWC Ericsson / GSMA LTE Broadcast Forum meeting is an invitation-only event, taking place in the Ericsson Hall 2 at Mobile World Congress, Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, on Tuesday, February 23.
In addition to hosting the MWC Ericsson / GSMA LTE Broadcast Forum, Ericsson will deliver a number of LTE Broadcast demonstrations and presentations including:
- LTE Broadcast Media Optimized Network Technology with Telstra, Ericsson Hall; Demo exhibits LTE Broadcast in combination with advanced CDN functionalities to enable pre-positioning of content
- LTE Broadcast Over The Air Technology with Telstra, Ericsson Hall; Demo exhibits an LTE Broadcast Mobile Router, facilitating the extension of the device ecosystem to a range of devices that themselves do not support LTE Broadcast
- Feb 25, 12:15 - News & Content on Mobile: New Trends in Consumer Consumption roundtable with Elisabetta Romano, part of the GSMA Conference
