Ericsson Mobile Platforms announced today that 30 percent of the world's WCDMA handsets sold during 2004 are based on Ericsson Mobile Platforms technology. Six of the top handset manufacturers in the world have license agreements with Ericsson Mobile Platforms for WCDMA.
"Handset manufactures and operators appreciate our platforms' stability, interoperability and performance," said Sandeep Chennakeshu, president of Ericsson Mobile Platforms. "Our platform architecture is unique as it allows handset manufacturers to develop applications for one platform and reuse the applications across the portfolio of platforms from us. This reduces development cost and time to market for manufacturers."

Ericsson Mobile Platforms has taken an early lead in WCDMA with a market share of more than 30 percent of the number of shipped handset units in 2004. Among Ericsson Mobile Platforms' customers are several of the world's leading mobile phone vendors that buy their technology from Ericsson on a license basis.

Ericsson Mobile Platforms has a complete offering, delivering reference designs (the blueprint to build a mobile phone with essential components), platform software (which provides access to key engines for manufacturers to build and launch applications), chipsets (ASICs) and development boards, development and test tools, industrialization solutions (software tools to calibrate and test phones in factories), interoperability and type approval support, training, support and documentation.

"When engaging with our customers, we bring our experience from developing TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE and WCDMA technology for over 200 million mobile phones units deployed in over 100 countries in the world, leveraging Ericsson's extensive portfolio of 16,000 patents," Chennakeshu said during Ericsson Fall Capital Markets Day in San Diego.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
