Ericsson's AXE Access 910 in live trial Ericsson's new access node, AXE Access 910, is in service for live traffic for the first time. A trial, involving 700 subscribers of the Vaasa Telephone Company in Vaasa, Finland, is now in progress. The pilot project will be followed by a worldwide roll-out of AXE Access 910, starting in 1999. "AXE Access 910 is a future-proof access node," says Kjell Nilsson, General Manager at Ericsson's Product Unit Access, Switching. "It allows Ericsson customers to optimize their infrastructure investments by adding new features to their basic platform as the market changes." AXE Access 910 uses modularity and open standards to provide the operator with maximum flexibility. The node can integrate narrow band access like POTS and ISDN, and broadband access like HDSL or ADSL. Operators can use these unique features to offer end-users TV broadcasts, high-speed internet access, telecommuting, video on demand, multimedia services, and a number of other services. The product is a complementary part of a range of Ericsson products addressing narrow band and broadband access. Furthermore, AXE Access 910 is a highly cost-effective option. Cost of ownership is reduced through the product's small footprint, its minimal maintenance demands and its low power consumption compared with alternative solutions. "This product is an important choice for us," says Börje Lindén, Technical Director of the Vaasa Telephone Company, a part of the Finnet group. "The pace at which the telecommunications market is growing makes it vital to have nodes that can cope with both new services and growing traffic."
