At the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, Ericsson's president and CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg today gave his views on the telecoms industry and on how Ericsson will meet new customer and consumer demands. "We are about to start a whole new stage in mobile communications - Mobile Triple Play, enabled by mobile broadband," said Carl-Henric Svanberg.
Triple play is when telephony, Internet and TV is provided in one common infrastructure in the fixed networks.

"With mobility as a fundamental driver for consumer convenience, we believe triple play is now going mobile - we call this Mobile Triple Play," said Carl-Henric Svanberg. "Mobile broadband is the enabler for services such as TV in the mobile, mobile office and Internet access, similar to triple play in the fixed networks."

The industry must focus even more on making things convenient for consumers, because their behaviors drive the business and technology development. Consumers want quality services that they can use easily. Ericsson's experience clearly shows that mobility, speed and ease of use are essential.

"We are taking a very important next step in the 3G rollout with the evolved version of WCDMA, HSDPA," Svanberg said. "Ericsson has taken an early lead in HSDPA, the enabler for mobile broadband, and we are demonstrating that this week in Cannes. I think we can say that the first phase of 3G deployments is behind us, and we can confirm that 2005 will be the year for mass-market growth for WCDMA and the start for mobile broadband."

Svanberg also underlined the importance of understanding not only technology and new revenue-generating services but also the importance of   increasing overall efficiency and reducing operating expenses.

"Operators seek trusted partners to further develop their operations and reduce operating expenses," Svanberg said. "It is not enough to be just a provider of technology. To succeed, vendors need to be partners rather than suppliers."

Svanberg described a healthy, confident telecommunications industry with exciting and innovative direction for the future.

"We have experienced the strongest growth of mobile users ever, with 300 million new subscribers in 2004," Svanberg said. "This is exciting for a company with a vision of being the prime driver in an all-communicating world."

Also during 3GSM World Congress, Håkan Eriksson, Ericsson's senior vice president and chief technology officer, addressed the evolution of technology in the light of Mobile Triple Play. Mikael Bäck, Ericsson's vice president for WCDMA radio networks, spoke about Ericsson's WCDMA leadership and HSDPA launch plan.
