Ericsson's IP backbone enables mobile Internet for Korea Telecom Freetel Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network provides mobile data solution for premier Korean CDMA operator Ericsson, the leader in end-to-end mobile Internet solutions, today announced that CDMA operator Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF) has selected Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) as the IP backbone for KTF's new mobile data network, which will be deployed this year. Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network will allow KTF, the world's fastest growing CDMA operator with five million subscribers, to support the explosive growth in mobile IP services and subscribers as they migrate to this evolved network. Using Ericsson's PBN, KTF will evolve from a mobile CDMA operator providing 2G mobile Internet services like Short Message Service (SMS) to a mobile ISP providing comprehensive, extended services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and high-speed mobile IP services. Ericsson's PBN will allow KTF to enter the mobile ISP market quickly and with carrier-class quality, ensuring their success as a market leader. In addition, Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network will provide KTF with a clear migration path from an evolved 2G wireless network (1XRTT and HDR) to a next generation 3G wireless network (3XRTT). These wireless technologies deliver operators greater bandwidth, and enable them to deliver new and expanded services over multiservice networks. Ericsson's future-proof migration strategy will ensure significant cost savings for KTF as well as its customers. KTF will use Ericsson's widely deployed PBN platforms, the AXD 301 High- Performance ATM Switch and AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router. Together, the AXD 301 and AXI 540 will provide Quality of Service (QoS) and VPN services via Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) across the Packet Backbone Network. MPLS enables intelligent allocation of bandwidth resources and prioritization of voice and data packets through traffic engineering. This will allow KTF to offer customers a wide range of value-added services. "Ericsson has unmatched expertise in end-to-end telecommunications for both fixed and wireless networks, which differentiates us from our competitors," said Mike Thurk, executive vice president of Ericsson's Data Backbone and Optical Networks division. "We understand operator and ISP needs for reliable IP networks, and are confident that our carrier- class Packet Backbone Network will allow our first Korean customer, KTF, to become a leader in mobile Internet services." Ericsson is the leading communications supplier, combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating the new era of mobile Internet. Ericsson provides total solutions covering everything from systems and applications to mobile phones and other communications tools. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for customers all over the world. KT Freetel provides services and products that can help realize mankind's long-cherished dream for boundless communications, while expanding our market to every nook and cranny of the earth. About Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network, formally announced in May 2000, is successfully deploying its IP/ATM backbone solutions around the world for both wireless and wireline operators and ISPs - with customers such as BT, China Mobile, Sonera Carrier Networks, Telekomunikacja Polska S.A., Telefonica, Cable & Wireless HKT, Diveo Broadband Networks (formerly Diginet Americas, Inc.), KPN International, Telia Denmark and Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates. Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) is an Internet-class, carrier- class data backbone and a key component to both wireless and wireline operators' transitions to next generation networks. PBN enables operators to offer new or expanded services over an IP infrastructure in an extremely reliable and ultra-scalable configuration. PBN is based on the following hardware platforms from Ericsson: the AXI 580 and AXI 520 IP backbone routers, AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router and AXD 301 High- Performance ATM Switch. PBN includes a Multiservice Management Suite (MMS) of products that includes in-house developed tools optimized for next generation networks and tools from best-in-class partners to address management issues in four key areas: network provisioning, service provisioning, service and network assurance, customer care and billing. PBN also employs Ericsson's innovative range of robust DWDM optical networking products: ERIcsson Optical Networking (ERION).
