Ericsson's IP backbone enables mobile Internet for Korea Telecom Freetel Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network provides mobile data solution for premier Korean CDMA operator Ericsson, the leader in end-to-end mobile Internet solutions, today announced that CDMA operator Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF) has selected Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) as the IP backbone for KTF's new mobile data network, which will be deployed this year. Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network will allow KTF, the world's fastest growing CDMA operator with five million subscribers, to support the explosive growth in mobile IP services and subscribers as they migrate to this evolved network. Using Ericsson's PBN, KTF will evolve from a mobile CDMA operator providing 2G mobile Internet services like Short Message Service (SMS) to a mobile ISP providing comprehensive, extended services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and high-speed mobile IP services. Ericsson's PBN will allow KTF to enter the mobile ISP market quickly and with carrier-class quality, ensuring their success as a market leader. In addition, Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network will provide KTF with a clear migration path from an evolved 2G wireless network (1XRTT and HDR) to a next generation 3G wireless network (3XRTT). These wireless technologies deliver operators greater bandwidth, and enable them to deliver new and expanded services over multiservice networks. Ericsson's future-proof migration strategy will ensure significant cost savings for KTF as well as its customers. KTF will use Ericsson's widely deployed PBN platforms, the AXD 301 High- Performance ATM Switch and AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router. Together, the AXD 301 and AXI 540 will provide Quality of Service (QoS) and VPN services via Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) across the Packet Backbone Network. MPLS enables intelligent allocation of bandwidth resources and prioritization of voice and data packets through traffic engineering. This will allow KTF to offer customers a wide range of value-added services.
