Ericsson's mobile softswitch reduces costs dramatically and is a key step toward all-IP

Report this content
Ericsson's mobile softswitch solution allows operators to reduce their core network operating expenditures up to 50 percent through efficient design, infrastructure and transmission. Together with IMS it powers the evolution toward an all-IP network.
Typically, operators spend 60 percent of their income on operating expenses. Savings in operating expenditures enable operators to grow traffic and maintain margins even as voice tariffs are steadily decreasing.

Ericsson mobile softswitch solution enables significant savings through the efficient and flexible layered architecture design. Layered architecture supports separation and centralization of the sophisticated equipment responsible for call control and network intelligence, enabling a reduction in the number and size of main core network sites. Likewise, the switching equipment is simplified in operation and design and can be distributed to the edges of the network for maximum transmission efficiency. State-of- the- art infrastructure minimizes space and power requirements.

Introducing Ericsson's mobile softswitch solution is the first step on the way toward an all-IP core network. Through the introduction of a layered architecture, the Ericsson mobile softswitch ensures a common foundation for new consumer services. Ericsson mobile softswitch with layered architecture complements the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in the evolution of real-time voice and multimedia communications over IP.

With 18 live commercially deployed mobile softswitch networks, Ericsson has superior experience and fine-tuned products in this area.

Ericsson is the market leader in softswitch solutions for both fixed and mobile telecommunication networks, with the world's first softswitch introduced in 2000, the world's first mobile softswitch introduced in March 2003, and with more than 50 commercially deployed live networks on all continents spanning across wireline, GSM and WCDMA networks.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About Ericsson Layered Architecture and Mobile Softswitch Solution
Ericsson's Layered Architecture is the architecture for future 2G and 3G networks. Layered Architecture simplifies the network structure and supports separation of call control and network intelligence equipment from the actual switching through the introduction of function-specific network elements in the application, control, connectivity and access layers.

Ericsson's Mobile Softswitch solution was launched in March 2003, thereby making it the world's first commercial mobile softswitch solution. It is the leading solution that typically enables a 50 percent core network savings and enables a safe and standardized implementation of carrier-grade mobile voice over packet networks. Ericsson Mobile Softswitch is fully compliant with open standards found in 3GPP Release 4 and 5 and enables localized switching functionality that further reduces network complexity and transmission costs while at the same time, provides operators with the option to eliminate the tandem layer.

Ericsson's mobile softswitch has a unique migration feature that allows operators to reuse their existing equipment and to upgrade their networks in a stepwise manner to layered architecture. The pooling of MSC servers increases capacity utilization and resilience and reduces the network's signaling load. Furthermore the Ericsson's solution, based on 3rd generation softswitch servers and media gateways facilitates the introduction of a common GSM and WCDMA core network.

About IMS
Ericsson's IMS solution enables consumers to communicate in a variety of modes - including voice, text, pictures and video, or in combinations of these. At the same time, it has been specifically designed to offer fixed and mobile operators a smooth, service-driven, low-risk path to evolve to all-IP operations.

Ericsson's IMS solution is a fully integrated, end-to-end IP environment that will provide seamless communication over IP, and enables flexible application development and deployment.

Ericsson offers an IMS system for fixed and mobile operators, including a range of applications to drive revenues and let operators stepwise move into a rich multimedia offering. Ericsson has vast knowledge from years of work in the IMS area, both from a standardization and development point of view. Ericsson has the capability to integrate and optimize networks to handle packet-based services with the quality, security and reliability expected telecom grade.

Ericsson has signed 25 IMS system contracts for commercial launch or trial, all based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem standard. The contracts are distributed over the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa and include GSM/GPRS, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and wireline implementations. The various contracts include a mix of applications such as push to talk, combinational services, Voice over IP and IP Centrex.
