Ericsson's Mobile TV solution selected by Celcom
In an effort to further enhance its 3G services offerings, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad has awarded Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) a contract to provide Ericsson Mobile TV and Video solutions.
Ericsson will supply and integrate Ericsson's convergent streaming solution, which will provide Celcom with a single platform for packet and circuit switched mobile TV.
The channel selector will allow the mobile phone to be easily used as an interactive remote control for quick surfing between channels by just pushing the numbers on the key pad. It functions in a manner similar to a traditional television remote control, providing the users with a TV-like experience - selecting between a range of TV programs on their mobile.
With this solution in place, Celcom will be prepared to offer interactive mobile TV service that will enable its customers to interact with a show that they are watching on their mobile phone. Celcom's customers will be able to vote, chat and communicate with a television presenter while watching their favorite show - all at the same time from their mobile phones.
Another service made possible with the deployment of this solution is 3G Pocketsports, which uses advanced sports video streaming technology to allow customers to view or share sports-related video through video extraction and video highlight.
Jan Signell, President of Ericsson South East Asia and Country Manager of Ericsson Malaysia, says: "We are pleased that Celcom has chosen our Mobile TV solutions as part of its 3G offerings and we look forward to supporting them in delivering services that will enrich the mobile lifestyles of their customers."
Ericsson provides operators with a true end-to-end solution that utilizes the WCDMA and GSM/EDGE mobile networks for commercial mobile TV and video services. Today, existing 3G mobile technology enables service providers to launch high-quality and cost-efficient mobile TV services.
By the end of 2005, more than 40 operators had commercially launched mobile TV over mobile networks via unicast. As mobile TV becomes a mass-market service, mobile network broadcast technologies, such as MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) will be added to mobile networks to further boost capacity.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
