Ericsson's open platform enables faster intro of differentiated wireless services Ericsson is launching an open platform that will enable wireless operators to more easily offer differentiated services and cut costs. The platform with wireless Internet readiness, called JAMBALA, will enable operators to introduce new services faster and facilitate targeting of niche markets. The new Intelligent Network platform leverages its open architecture to tackle two important issues facing wireless operators today: service development and cost control. It is designed especially for wireless applications, supporting a large number of telecom-grade services. Its open architecture also makes it especially suitable for networks with equipment from different vendors. For operators, the architecture means they can improve efficiency, both in time and revenues. "Embracing 'openness' is the most efficient way for wireless operators to adapt to the needs of a changing marketplace. And it's the surest way to advance as an industry," says Jan Wäreby, Executive Vice President, Ericsson Radio Systems. "JAMBALA's design - its platform architecture and use of Java technology - allows operators to fully capitalize on the promise of open- platform technology." The Ericsson developed scaleable platform, currently available to D-AMPS IS- 136 operators, has advanced middleware, containing a new Ericsson Operating System designed specifically for wireless services and wireless operator needs. By introducing software fault tolerance, the architecture also offers telecom-grade availability and fault tolerance on off-the-shelf hardware. From a qualitative standpoint the platform exceeds telecoms performance benchmarks in every important respect: reliability, availability and processing speeds. The architecture allows the creation of applications using standard programming languages, after which they can be run on the most cost- effective hardware. The architecture also integrates Sun Microsystems' Java Virtual Machine, reducing processing times of Java applications, making the solution especially suitable for real-time applications. It also allows full use of Java's capabilities for new application development and implementation. Ericsson, the world leader in Network Intelligence , has supplied solutions to more than 100 fixed and wireless operators. Customers range from start-up carriers and ISP's to global alliances. There are almost 90 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS networks worldwide. D-AMPS was the first technology to be commercially available as a dual-band (800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode analog/digital) technology. Approximately 14 million subscribers are already using D-AMPS digital services. Ericsson´s 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
