Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Taiwan's largest telecom operator, have signed an agreement for the supply of reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). This is the first contract awarded by CHT for its five-year ROADM plan. Highly efficient and cost-effective optical solutions will be implemented to help achieve CHT's Optical Era Project objectives.

Ericsson's Marconi MHL 3000 family, proposed in the ROADM solution for CHT, will significantly boost network speed and performance, enabling up to 80 channels with up to 40Gbps capacity per channel. The use of new features, including WSS (Wavelength Selective Switching), advanced automation and network management, will help CHT keep its operational costs at a highly competitive level for the long term, while the future-proof nature of MHL 3000 will enable it to be easily upgraded and expanded as the need for network capacity grows.

Tzu-Han Huang, Vice President of CHT says: "ROADM is a crucial part of our MOD (Multimedia on Demand) offering and future core network development in our Optical Era Project.  We therefore applied a lengthy and thorough technical evaluation and 10-month-long product-testing process to select a vendor. Upon completion of ROADM, Chunghwa Telecom will yet again take an industry-leading position in optical network planning, delivering world-class services to our customers, and drive development of the local telecom industry."

Stefan Johansson, President of Ericsson Taiwan, says: "This contract confirms Ericsson's leadership in the optical transport area. We are pleased our solutions are in line with CHT's expectation. We will soon start implementation with our local systems integration partner TECOM. We are committed to making CHT's Optical Era Project a success."
