Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has been selected by China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak) for the rapid expansion of its GSM network throughout the south of the country.

Under the contract Ericsson will provide a complete GSM radio network including MINI-LINK to extend coverage to 312 cities in the densely-populated Sindh and Balochistan regions.

The project, to start this year, will increase network capacity and provide coverage in difficult terrain, as well as enhance operational efficiency and prepare CMPak for evolution to 3G and other advanced technologies.

Guo Yonghong, CEO CMPak, says: "Ericsson's solutions and experience will ensure that system design and construction will meet both our technical and business requirements. Being able to understand our unique needs was the key factor in Ericsson winning this contract."

Zibber Mohiuddin, President of Ericsson Pakistan, says: "We are pleased to be a partner to CMPak's success in one of the fastest-growing GSM markets in the world. This contract is a further demonstration of our commitment and capability to support our customers to achieve sustained business growth in high-growth markets."

CMPak was formed in 2007 following China Mobile's acquisition of Paktel. Ericsson has supported both companies for more than a decade, including deploying the first mobile network in Pakistan, on behalf of Paktel, in 1990.

This project is seen as clear recognition of Ericsson's long-term commitment to strategic partnerships in Pakistan and across geographic boundaries.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
