Ericsson selected by Islandssimi to build multi-service network in Iceland Islandssimi hf., an Iceland-based next generation telecom company, has selected Ericsson to build a multi-service network for corporate users. The solution will serve commercial business customers with advanced high-speed data, telephony over ATM and IP, Internet access and multimedia services - all with one highly integrated solution. The multi-service network will be integrated with Islandssimi's fiber optic network, also delivered by Ericsson, and will begin service in early November in Reykjavik's industrial and business districts. The company's multi-service network will be fully operational by January 2000, and will service businesses with 350 points-of-presence in Reykjavik and nearby cities by 2001. The robust, carrier-class network also will provide international connections to Europe and the U.S. "Working together with Islandssimi to deploy high-speed data and voice services for their corporate customers is key to ensuring a carrier-class, reliable network," said Michael Thurk, vice president and general manager of Ericsson's business unit Datacom Networks. "We utilize the highest quality benchmarks in this end-to-end solution from the enterprise through the backbone. We strive to ensure service levels on par or surpassing the high standards we've come to expect from circuit-switched systems." The network will employ Ericsson's high-performance AXD 301 ATM switches, chosen for their highly reliable, compact and scalable design. Ericsson's AXD 321 integrated access equipment will unite the network's data and voice traffic at the enterprise for a single, powerful ATM solution that is both cost-effective and easy to manage. "We have a complete offering for our customers in data delivery and business voice," said Islandssimi's CEO Eythor Arnalds. "Our customers can enjoy quality voice and guaranteed bandwidth with bursts of higher bandwidth when needed - all through a single connection. We're excited to be the company that first brings integrated data services to businesses in Iceland." This cutting-edge solution integrates Ericsson's world-class AXE platform with the Tigris AXC 711 multi-service access server to deliver flexible, advanced telephony services and differentiated Internet access. Islandssimi also chose Ericsson's AXD 311 for industry leading voice compression to ensure cost- efficient international call terminations. Ericsson's MINI LINK microwave system also was selected as a highly reliable, quickly deployable last mile solution.
