Ericsson showcases live optical interoperability in Berlin

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announced that it had successfully participated in a real-time, global, network-interoperability demonstration in Berlin at ECOC07, Europe's largest optical communications event.

Carried out in conjunction with the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), the live demonstration highlighted the compatibility of Ericsson's optical portfolio with other vendors' equipment and its ability to support multivendor solutions within an operator's network and in a multioperator global network

The exhibition showcased end-to-end provisioning of dynamic, switched, on-demand Ethernet services over multiple, control-plane-enabled, intelligent optical core networks.

Ethernet is widely used today in backhaul across broadband networks and as bandwidth services to business customers.  The key benefit of Ethernet is its ubiquity, with interoperability through well-defined standards and low cost.

Ethernet is increasingly becoming a bearer technology of converging networks and is an important element of Ericsson's Full Service Broadband Networks.

The demonstration follows the OIF  Implementation Agreements  of UNI 2.0 and E-NNI and compliance with standards developed by ITU-T and the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).

Andrea Spaccapietra, Head of the Optical Networks product unit at Ericsson, says: "The successful demonstration reaffirms Ericsson's leading position in the optical industry and underlines our commitment to offering innovative solutions. Optical transport will continue to provide a key role as an effective solution for carrying mixed services for both fixed and mobile network operators, allowing them to evolve and meet major market trends."

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
