Ericsson signs contract in Ukraine Ericsson has signed a contract with Digital Cellular Communications (DCC) for the expansion of their TDMA network in Ukraine. The contract, valued at USD 30 million (SEK 250 Million), will enable DCC to expand both capacity and coverage of their network. Deliveries will begin immediately. DCC is the only TDMA (IS-136) operator in Ukraine and the second largest operator. This is the fourth expansion order that Ericsson has received from DCC in the past two years, and is in response to the rapid subscriber growth that they have experienced. Ukraine is the second largest country (by landmass) in Europe and has 52 million inhabitants. Ericsson delivers mobile systems to two of the largest mobile network operators in Ukraine. The contract includes the latest Ericsson dual-mode (analog/digital) RBS 884 radio base stations and the new high-capacity MSC 800 switching centers, based on the latest AXE 10 hardware platform. The switches will ensure year 2000 compliance for the network. There are approximately 95 million subscribers using TDMA/AMPS networks worldwide. TDMA is commercially available as a dual-band (800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog-digital) technology. Over 19 million subscribers are already using TDMA digital services. TDMA already delivers most of the IMT-2000 functionality and is being further enhanced to deliver all IMT-2000 capabilities in the existing 800 and 1900 MHz frequency bands and in the new 2 GHz band.
