Ericsson signs D-AMPS IS-136 contract in Brazil Ericsson has signed a contract with MAXITEL of Brazil for the turn-key construction of a D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA) digital wireless network covering the State of Minas Gerais. The contract is valued at USD 150 million (SEK 1,170 million) over a two year period. MAXITEL plans to begin commercial service in December 1998. Ericsson now has a market share of more than 50% of the new wireless operators' B-Band market in Brazil. This contract with MAXITEL covers Area 4 of the B-Band license areas. Nine of the B-Band areas that have awarded contracts have selected D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA) technology to provide the latest digital services available. MAXITEL is a consortium formed by Telecom Italia Mobile from Italy, Globopar, Bradesco and Vicunha from Brazil. There are nearly 90 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS networks worldwide. D-AMPS was the first technology to be commercially available as a dual-band (800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog/digital) technology. Nearly 16 million subscribers are already using D-AMPS digital services.
