Ericsson Signs GPRS Contract with One 2 One Ericsson and UK operator One 2 One have signed a contract for the packet-based technology, GPRS. Ericsson's GPRS solutions will enable One 2 One to provide IP and other packet-based wireless datacom services at speeds up to 115 kbps. The GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) order is part of a major infrastructure expansion from One 2 One. With this new packet-based technology, users are always connected, always on-line, and may be charged only for the amount of data that is transported. This is the first order for GPRS that Ericsson has won in the UK, and represents the third contract for GPRS that Ericsson has won this quarter. The One 2 One order includes a complete GPRS system, including the IP-based core network infrastructure, packet switching products, and upgrading of existing radio products. The new GPRS-based services will be available from One 2 One during 2000. GPRS enables a more than ten-fold increase of the current network speeds. With GPRS, bringing packet switching to mobile networks, it is also an important step for operators in the evolution to 3G (third-generation) networks. The Ericsson GPRS solution is an open standard solution, enabling multi-vendor interoperability. GPRS is a common step for both GSM and TDMA networks to handle higher data speeds and offer 3G packet capabilities. With this common technology, GPRS combined with the speed-increasing radio access technology, Edge, form a major step in the convergence of the two standards and enables users to access services in both networks. One 2 One has also signed up to trial third-generation (3G) wireless multimedia services at Ericsson's UK WCDMA Centre, which was opened outside London on February 19th. Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.
