Ericsson signs VoDSL agreement with KPN INS KPN International Network Services (INS) has chosen Ericsson for the upgrading of its German network to include Voice over DSL. The introduction of the ENGINE node is a step toward the migration of KPN's European wide network to a packet-based network to secure the expected market expansions for VoDSL. Ericsson supports KPN INS to enter a new strategic part of the broadband market by adding Voice over DSL to their portfolio. Through the agreement KPN makes a first footprint on this emerging market by expanding their wholesale services and acquiring a new segment of clients, DSL operators and Internet service providers. "We have chosen Ericsson's world class ENGINE solution because it has been well proven that Ericsson is able to deliver a complete and integrated VoDSL solution," said Leo Roobol, Member of the Board of Management KPN Royal Dutch Telecom and responsible for fixed networks. With KPN's new Voice over DSL service, service providers will now be able to offer high quality voice in addition to fast Internet access on the same DSL line to their customers. KPN enables service providers to offer a very competitive voice service to their retail customers without significant investments and with a very short time to market. The initial focus is on Germany where the first lines have been implemented successfully and the first calls have been made. On this basis a rollout in Europe can be made. Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world. Through a service selection and an ENGINE ATM node a voice gateway is used to have voice switched in the network. The existing KPN INS network is based on multi- service network nodes from Ericsson. About ENGINE ENGINE is Ericsson's global multi-service network offering for operators of fixed networks, designed for real-time services; a network able to carry large and growing volumes of IP-based traffic. The ENGINE concept efficiently builds new and migrates operators' current circuit-switched networks into a single next generation network, based on ATM and IP packet switching technologies. Up to date Ericsson has received 51 contracts for ENGINE-type solutions including Telefónica Spain, Diveo, BT, Telia Denmark and Telia Europe, KPN, WorldCom and others. About KPN's International Network Services KPN's International Network Services is a global network operator/service provider active on the wholesale market for international telecommunications services.
