Ericsson strengthens leadership position in 3G with new microwave portfolio

Report this content

Ericsson is further strengthening its end-to-end 3G solutions with a new wireless transmission portfolio. For operators this will improve service quality and lower operational costs. The portfolio is optimized for mobile operators to offer new datacom services, while maintaining the high levels of reliability users have grown accustomed to when using today’s mobile telephony services.

Ericsson’s broadened portfolio leverages its leadership in microwave. The company holds a global 60 percent market share for microwave access transmission systems in GSM networks. The reliability and cost-efficiency of microwave has given it a crucial role in today’s mobile networks. Six out of 10 GSM base stations worldwide are connected by microwave.

With 3G rolling out, the traffic demands on access transmission is experiencing a fundamental change. Current changes in this part of networks, feeding traffic to and from base stations, are driven by the increasing amount of packet-based services. For operators, it is crucial to enhance access transmission – to accommodate the data traffic and the changing traffic patterns compared to today’s voice traffic.

With user numbers and mobile datacom growing, it is also vital for service quality that access transmission can meet these new needs in a flexible way. Operators must efficiently handle growing volumes of voice services as well as a new range of services like Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS).

Ericsson’s microwave portfolio for mobile operators enables more cost-efficient roll-out of 3G, and offers optimal flexibility for operators to react to changing traffic conditions. Enhanced capacity to handle the growing traffic volumes and increased spectrum efficiency are attractive system features for mobile operators.

Ericsson’s commitment to open standards is shown by the new portfolio, making it fully compatible with networks from other suppliers. In fact, 25 percent of Ericsson’s deliveries of microwave systems are to mobile operators that have radio access networks from other suppliers.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
