Estonian mobile operator EMT has today launched their commercial EDGE service. Ericsson is sole supplier of a full commercial EDGE system to EMT. The upgrade of their existing GSM/GPRS Ericsson network in Estonia will enhance the usage of consumer and enterprise services.
Ericsson has provided a complete EDGE network infrastructure, delivering fast, packet-based mobile Internet access. Implementation into the GSM network has already begun and EDGE service is now available in selected areas in Tallinn and will be gradually expanded all-over Estonia. EDGE, an enhancement of GPRS, can handle three times the data volume of GPRS in existing spectrum bands.

"The usage of mobile data services is really on the rise today and EDGE enables solutions with significantly higher speed for consumers and gives them a taste of 3G," says Valdo Kalm, CEO of EMT.

"We are proud that EMT, an Estonian market leader and a strong long-term business partner for Ericsson, is implementing the latest Ericsson EDGE system into their future-proof mobile network," said Veiko Sepp, President at Ericsson Estonia. "With their EDGE-upgraded mobile network, EMT can offer enhanced high-speed data communications services to their subscribers."

Ericsson and EMT have built up a strong strategic partnership over the decade. Ericsson is a sole supplier of GSM Core and Radio Network including GPRS/EDGE Network for EMT.
