Ericsson has been chosen as supplier of a full commercial EDGE system for Norwegian mobile operator Telenor Mobil. The upgrade of their existing GSM/GPRS Ericsson network in Norway will enable launch of new consumer and enterprise services. The agreement also includes deliveries to the world's most northern mobile network at Svalbard.
Under the agreement, Ericsson will provide a complete EDGE network infrastructure, delivering fast, packet-based mobile Internet access. EDGE, an enhancement of GPRS, can handle three times the data volume of GPRS in existing spectrum bands.

"We are proud that Telenor Mobil, a strong long-term business partner for Ericsson, is implementing the latest Ericsson EDGE system into their future-proof mobile network," said Aksel Aanensen, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Ericsson Norway. "With their EDGE-upgraded mobile network, Telenor Mobil can offer new and competitive high-speed data communications services to their subscribers."

Deliveries have started and the network upgrade will serve approximately 2 million subscribers in Norway.
