Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) has signed a contract for a Coastal Surveillance system in Malta, together with Norwegian partner Norcontrol IT. The system will supply Malta with effective surveillance and control of the port and coastal area. Delivery will take place at the end of 2006.
The contract includes three surveillance radars, a Direction Finder, the Ericsson transmission link MINI-LINK as well as other equipment. The Direction Finder is used to confirm the identity of the ship with which you communicate thus increasing the security level. The system is built around a Vessel Traffic Management System from Norcontrol IT.

Robert Borgström, General Manager for the Ericsson product area Security Solutions says: "This is a break through in the area of border and coastal surveillance, which is a new and expanding area."

Eldar Hauge, Area manager for Border & Territorial Security within Ericsson product area Security Solutions says: "The present solution mainly concerns sea security, which is a large market. The order was won against fierce competition. Ericsson's unique knowledge of communication, defense and security solutions means that we have the opportunity to further develop the security aspect in this kind of business. It can, for example, be about identifying smugglers or illegal fishing."
