In an effort to provide greater reach and enhance its network coverage nationwide, Celcom Berhad in Malaysia has awarded a contract to Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) to expand, modernize and upgrade its GSM network to a new architecture. Covering the northern, eastern and central regions of the Malaysian peninsula, the project will be implemented over 12 months, beginning in early July.

Jan Signell, president of Ericsson South East Asia and country manager of Ericsson Malaysia, says: "We are proud to have been chosen by Celcom for its network upgrade and modernization. Ericsson has been a partner to Celcom for many years now, and we are fully committed to enhancing Celcom's network quality and coverage, as well as maximizing its network efficiency to support new services."

"Our strong technology and network-architecture leadership will have a positive bearing on this project. Celcom will benefit from our knowledge and experience gained from our other markets, not just in this region, but globally."

Ericsson will provide a comprehensive portfolio of telecommunication equipment and services, including deployment and integration of radio access network equipment, as well as switching capacity and software upgrades. The contract also includes the Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solution (MSS) comprising an MSC-server, media gateway, mobile packet backbone network (MPBN) and operations support system (OSS), which will provide Celcom with significant savings through an efficient and flexible layered-architecture design.

The implementation of the Ericsson Mobile Softswitch is a significant first step for Celcom to efficiently evolve towards an all-IP network. By complementing mobile softswitch and IP infrastructure with a standardized service environment, Celcom will be able to offer a wide range of new and differentiating multimedia services to its customers.

The mobile softswitch solution gives Celcom the opportunity to utilize network resources for next-generation services in the most cost-efficient manner, while continuing to benefit from traditional voice services. The first Ericsson MSS switch is scheduled to carry live traffic by the end of September.

Ericsson will also provide its Ericsson Telephony Softswitch solution, which entails the deployment of a new international switching center (ISC) and multi network-operations support system (MN-OSS) to upgrade Celcom's existing switches. This particular solution will provide Celcom with a scalable and flexible platform to cater for the growing volume of international voice and data traffic.

Ericsson is the leading supplier of GSM and WCDMA infrastructure to more than 300 operators worldwide and is leading the market with more than 75 commercially launched fixed or mobile softswitch networks.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
