Ericsson to provide telephony softswitch upgrade and managed services for Portuguese operator ONI
Ericsson's telephony softswitch solution will provide ONI with a secure evolution from a circuit-switched to a multi-service network. It will be capable of carrying large and growing volumes of voice and data traffic, integrating traditional fixed telephony with IP-based traffic in a single network.
As part of the agreement, Ericsson will also be responsible for three years for the day-to-day management of ONI's network, providing a full range of operational and maintenance activities. This will allow ONI to reduce operating expenditure, increase its focus on customers and strengthen its position in the Portuguese market.
Xavier Martin, CTO of ONI Telecom, says: "This agreement will allow us to continue serving our customers with the quality and reliability they are used to, and at the same time capitalize on the efficiency this new technology will bring."
Fatima Raimondi, President of Ericsson Portugal, says she is pleased ONI has chosen Ericsson as the supplier for its next-generation platforms and provider of managed services. "Flexibility and high availability, in combination with our local expertise, have been the key factors for further strengthening our partnership with ONI," she says.
Ericsson is the leader in managed services with 48 publically announced contracts. Currently, Ericsson-managed networks serve more than 38 million subscribers worldwide. Thirty-three operators have selected Ericsson for its softswitch solution and 25 networks using the solution are in commercial service today.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
