Ericsson to trial new Directory Access Gateway at the Swedish University Network Ericsson and the Swedish University Network (SUNET) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering trials of Ericsson's Directory Access Gateway (DAG) service. Ericsson will install DAG, the world's first global telecoms and Internet directory, at SUNET by the end of August this year as a key trial site for the new product. The new DAG service will be used by SUNET within the TISDAG1) project to provide a national email directory for Sweden. It works by acting as a gateway to all Internet operator and service providers' directories. This will enable Internet users to have instant access to all the contact details of Swedish users of the Internet. This includes mobile and fixed telephone numbers, e- mail addresses and WWW sites even though the information may be contained in different formats and in different places by different organisations. DAG is the first service of its kind to offer a single point of access to this information. DAG opens a new range of business opportunities for network operators, information and service providers. "The agreement is great news for Ericsson since SUNET is one of the main driving forces within the Internet area in Europe," said Per Jomer, vice president and general manager, Ericsson Network Intelligence. "Since the release of DAG in June, it has generated much interest from both the telecoms and datacoms markets. With the explosion in the use of email and www addresses, clearly there is strong demand for a product that can find a complete set of contact details within seconds and at the touch of a button." DAG is a distributed directory service containing a central index of data sources rather than the data itself. DAG accepts queries in all commonly available protocols and interrogates its index to find which directory servers might contain relevant information. It then accesses all the identified servers, using the protocol appropriate to each server, collates the results for the transmission to the user. DAG also contains charging interfaces, allowing flexible billing of transactions. Ericsson Network Intelligence, the world leader in Intelligent Networks (IN), has supplied IN products and services to more than 100 fixed and wireless operators in over 40 countries. The TISDAG Project The Technical Infrastructure Swedish Directory Access Gateway (TISDAG) was initiated two years ago. The project aims to implement a protocol translator for Internet directory services. It has already received recognition from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as an example of how to implement a protocol translator for directory services. The project is supported by the Swedish Foundation for Knowledge and Competence Development (KK-stiftelsen).
