Ericsson unveils first GSM mobile camera - CommuniCamtm Ericsson today unveiled the world's first mobile camera for GSM - the CommuniCamtm - the first of Ericsson's imaging products. It is an innovative, fun and simple way to send instant pictures from a mobile phone to an e-mail address or store them in a virtual photo album. The camera will be commercially launched during second quarter 2001. Instant imaging is growing in popularity. The first of its kind, the new mobile camera CommuniCam is an innovative, fun and simple way to send instant pictures using a mobile phone, adding a new visual dimension to personal messaging. To transform a mobile phone into an instant imaging device, users simply snap the camera on to the end of a mobile phone, flip the phone up to the eye and shoot. The CommuniCam can be used with any Ericsson mobile phone equipped with a modem. The image can then be sent as an e-mail, added to the user's personal WebAlbum on the Ericsson Mobile Internet portal stored in the camera, or deleted. The CommuniCam is controlled through dynamic user-friendly menus in the phone's display and up to 5 images can be stored in the camera for later use. The WebAlbum offers a unique opportunity to create an online community through personal pictures, and provides a gallery from which to create and send personalized electronic postcards. Wherever they are, CommuniCam users can share the moment instantly with friends or family, whether it is off-pist skiing, partying or just sending an image of a meeting point to a friend's computer before a rendezvous. Aimed primarily at 16-24 year old early-adopters, the key to CommuniCam is fun and spontaneity. CommuniCam supports 352x288-pixel image resolution with a color depth of 24 bits, which is perfectly adapted for non-professional usage. This resolution is optimized for swift transmission thus the average transmission time for a single CommuniCam image is only about one minute. With a distinctive and instantly likeable curved look, the CommuniCam comes with its own pouch that can be worn around the neck at all times. Weighing just 25g, the CommuniCam can go everywhere a mobile phone goes, making it ideal for spontaneous use. The CommuniCam combines a camera and an Internet site where CommuniCam users can link to the web/WAP Ericsson Mobile Internet portal and create a personal album of images. Images can be edited on-line and also be downloaded from EMI to a computer or laptop.
