Ericsson wins wireless contract in Canada Ericsson has won a contract to provide a USD 63 million (SEK 490 million) private radio network to E-Comm (Emergency Communi-cations for Southwest B.C.) in western Canada. The wide-area network will be in service early spring 1999, providing wireless emergency communications for police, ambulance and fire department services. After a fourth rollout phase it will cover 33,670 square kilometers in British Columbia, including the greater Vancouver area. Ericsson has provided more than 400 private radio systems to some 40 countries. Systems supplied by Ericsson's local company in Canada currently handles more than 105,000 calls every day. Ericsson's EDACS (Enhanced Digital Access Communications System) integrates a wireless voice system and a wireless datacom system into one single system. Voice and datacom services share any radio channel without interruption. The system is especially designed to meet the demanding needs of two-way critical dispatch communications.
