Ericsson world first GSM pico base station Ericsson has introduced the world's first GSM pico base station. The self- contained RBS 2401 Indoor Base Station is designed to reduce the cost of providing high-quality coverage for wireless office services in public buildings, such as shopping malls, airports and hotels. Ericsson unveils its new base station today at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, running until February 25. The RBS 2401 is small and light enough to be installed by one person almost anywhere inside a building. Despite its small size, the two-transceiver new base station has enough capacity to serve around 100 typical office users. It is fully prepared for advanced GSM services, including new IP packet datacoms - GPRS (General Packet Radio Services), real-time datacoms - HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), EFR speech coding (Enhanced Full Rate), 14.4 kbps timeslots. Ericsson's RBS 2401 initially supports GSM 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies and fits into Hierarchical Cell Structure schemes. It may also be deployed as part of Ericsson's GSM on the Net system - the integrated GSM-over-IP business communications solution. By handling GSM calls with indoor radio coverage, the RBS 2401 frees capacity in the macro and micro cell layers - further helping to improve service quality and revenue-generating potential. Since it is optimized for indoor applications, the RBS 2401 Indoor Base Station consumes only 65 Watts - about the same power as an average electric light bulb. It has no moving parts, is silent in operation and requires no regular maintenance. The RBS 2401 unit, which houses all power and transceiver components, measures just 387 x 510 x 126 millimeter and weighs a mere 17 kilograms. The unit is delivered pre-tested, with color-coded connectors. No special site preparation is required, and Ericsson's TEMS service solution software package can be used to plan and test the installation for superior quality. GSM is the world's most widely deployed wireless communications standard. Ericsson is the global market leader in GSM, with close to half of the world's 140 million GSM subscribers connected by Ericsson systems. More than 125 operators in some 65 countries around the world rely on GSM systems from Ericsson. Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.
