mediaWays chooses Ericsson's ENGINE for IP network in the UK mediaWays, Germany's second-largest Internet Service Provider and a subsidiary of the Telefonica Group, has chosen Ericsson's Open Network Gateway (ONG) SS7 solution for Voice over IP and Internet access. The contract is for a three-year agreement and will provide around one million subscribers with next generation Internet services. The ONG is a part of Ericsson's ENGINE offering that will provide multimedia services. The first implementations at mediaWays are already ongoing in the United Kingdom. The agreement is valid for all countries in which mediaWays operates around the world. Ericsson's standards-based ONG is one of the industry's first open solutions supporting SS7 signaling in a distributed architecture. This architecture separates call control and connectivity. ONG is a step to Ericsson's ENGINE Multimedia, which will allow full multimedia functionality over IP. "Ericsson's ONG solution is the only viable solution we have seen with a Universal Port that is data, voice and SS7 enabled," said Martin Kütter, Managing Director, mediaWays.uk. "This integration will allow us to rapidly offer new services to customers and give us quick time-to- revenue." "We are very pleased that mediaWays has chosen Ericsson's ENGINE for the upgrading of their network, and confident that the robust ONG solution will help them become even more competitive on the market," said Einar Lindquist, President, Ericsson Division Multi-Service Networks. The ENGINE concept efficiently builds new and migrates operators' current circuit-switched networks into a single next generation network, based on ATM and IP packet switching technologies. www.ericsson.se/engine About the Open Network Gateway The Open Network Gateway is a SIP-based open standard solution supporting industry standard protocols specified by the MEGACO Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The system is designed as a next generation PSTN/IP gateway for future multimedia services. The standard ONG platform consists of three components: 1. Signaling Gateway designed to communicate with the SS7 network via SIP or H.323. 2. Media Gateway Controller designed to manage Media Gateway resources 3. A series of Media Gateways (MG) that provide the bearer channel for voice, fax or data. "Universal port" technology, i.e. data, voice & SS7 ready, enables full flexibility and increased potential for services revenue. In addition, voice quality has been designed to meet the stringent E.168 protocol, Ericsson's highest standard.
