Nigeria goes mobile with Ericsson Ericsson has been appointed as sole or main supplier by all three GSM- operators in Africa's most populous country, Nigeria. These contracts also signify the start of mobile telephony in Nigeria, recently granting EWN (Econet Wireless Nigeria), Nitel and MTN the country's first licenses for mobile telephony. By this Ericsson has strengthened its position as the leading vendor of wireless infrastructure in the fast growing African market. Ericsson will install turnkey GSM 900 and 1800 networks including switching, radio base stations, new service features, pre-paid and civil works. The contracts span over a period of five years, specifics of the individual commitments and order values cannot be given at this stage. Ericsson's documented ability for fast network roll-out played a decisive role in this groundbreaking suite of contract wins. Network deployment has already started and the first parts will be operational already in August this year. Against a backdrop of scarce and unreliable fixed line services, Nigeria has accumulated a huge demand for better telecommunications. With a 125 million inhabitants and an expected 5 -10 million subscribers in the next five years, Nigeria is potentially the largest market in Africa and constitutes a significant percentage of the continent's telecom business.
