Battle meets Berg in Sensational South Africa
DISCOVER AUTHENTIC AFRICA WITH AUDLEY TRAVEL
South Africa’s famous Battlefields in KwaZulu-Natal offer so much more than just historical significance. The rolling hills and lush valleys of Zululand offer an utterly memorable, authentically African experience for the whole family. Plus visitors can enjoy exceptional value for money if they travel in the low seasons which run between May and the end of August and again for the month of December.
Isandlwana Lodge is located at the site of the famous Battle of Isandlwana, where the Zulus claimed victory over the British on 22 January 1879, as portrayed in the famous movie “Zulu” which celebrates its 50thbirthday this year. If you’re a history buff, you’ll love the lively recounting of the battles in the region by in-house historian, Rob Gerrard, or one of his associates, and the chance to join a day tour to the nearby battle sites, including Rorke’s Drift.
For those who prefer to focus on the present than ponder the past, the area offers hiking, mountain bike trails, horse riding and excellent birding around the lodge. Not to be missed is the guided Zulu Village Safari, visiting the rural village below the lodge for an authentic, untouristy experience of the real Africa.
This cultural tour is led by Dalton Ngobese (who not only grew up in the village - but is a real character at the lodge with talents behind the bar not to mention some great moves should guests request a Zulu Dancing display). Dalton’s own ancestors fought in the Battle of Isandlwana and he has travelled to Wales to meet HRH Prince Charles during Armed Forces Day in 2010 – in full Zulu regalia! His cultural tour includes visiting a family Ikhaya (home), the local clinic, the historic St. Vincent’s Church (Anglican) and a local school where the children might even perform one of their folklore stories in traditional song and dance. An unforgettable experience is meeting the local Sangoma (diviner) or Inyanga (herbal doctor) who can not only predict the future but heal a wide range of ailments with their traditional remedies. All revenue goes back into the community.
A stay in the Battlefields combines really well with a few days in the Drakensberg Mountains.
