Mange Tout, the fine dining restaurant at Mont Rochelle Hotel & Mountain Vineyards in Franschhoek, South Africa, has scored top honours in the inaugural South African Wine List Awards 2012

Mange Tout, the fine dining restaurant at Mont Rochelle Hotel & Mountain Vineyards in Franschhoek, has scored top honours in the inaugural South African Wine List Awards 2012, presented by food personality Michael Olivier and wine retailer Michael Bampfield Duggan of ‘M Squared’. With a top score of Three Flutes, the highest possible rating in the Long Wine List category (more than 86% overall), Mange Tout is among only 19 winners in the Western and Eastern Cape to receive this sought after recognition.

South Africa’s first Independent Wine List Awards was created as a uniquely local and completely autonomous platform to recognize those food and wine-serving establishments that set the bar in terms of the standards of the wine selection offered to their patrons. It also acknowledges their willingness to go the extra mile to create wine lists that enhance the particular culinary experience they offer.

Entry to the awards was open to all licensed restaurant venues, hotels, wine bars, pubs, game lodges and trains, with the panel of judges comprising some of the most prominent wine and food experts in the country, including Head Judge Cathy Marston, Wine Writer for top foodie website Food24; Cape Wine Master Alllan Mullins; respected Wine Writer Myrna Robins; and legendary Chef Billy Gallagher. Scoring criteria is based on the Content, Balance, Suitability, and Presentation of each entrant’s wine list. The awards take the form of five primary categories, being a Short Wine List (20 to 40 wines); Medium Wine List (41 to 80 Wines); Long List (over 81 wines); Best NEW List (for restaurants that opened in 2011); and Best Wine by the Glass List.

Diners at Mange Tout Restaurant may complement their dining experience with wine from an extensive wine list compiled by Mouton du Toit, the on-site wine expert who manages the hotel and restaurant Food & Beverage department. Mont Rochelle places great score on its wine offering, which not only focuses on wines from the Franschhoek Valley, but also includes a selection from regions across the country and internationally. This earned it top marks too in the annual Diners Club Winelist Awards in 2011, as the only restaurant in the Franschhoek Valley to receive a Diamond Award (the highest accolade).

The Mange Tout wine list offers a selection of 152 unfortified wines, including international vintages and several top wines produced in the Franschhoek Valley, as well as the Mont Rochelle and premier MIKO wines produced on the Mont Rochelle farm. While Mange Tout offers a comprehensive wine list, cellar door restaurant the Country Kitchen, offers Mont Rochelle and MIKO wines exclusively.

Cellar tours and wine tasting of the Mont Rochelle and Miko vintages are integral to the wine experience at this top gourmet destination, which consistently ranks among the best in the Western Cape.
