Hot off the press!! Serena open new hotel in Tanzania’s capital

We are delighted to announce that Serena Hotels officially took over the helm of The Royal Palm Hotel in Tanzania’s Capital this week (previously managed by MÖvenpick) and relaunched it on 1 December 2011 as the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel.  This acquisition will see a long term goal of Serena’s realised – the completion of its circuit in Tanzania.  This 230 room hotel will be positioned as the premier upmarket five star hotel in Dar and brings the Serena portfolio up to 25 properties.  The hotel is an oasis in the city centre with beautiful gardens and views over the city centre, the gardens with adjacent golf course and the shore of the Indian Ocean, just 10 minutes from the airport.  Images can be downloaded from http://gallery.ethosmarketing.co.uk/gallery/Dar-es-Salaam-Serena-Hotel

The Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel is the latest addition to the TPS, Serena Hotels Group, which is the tourism arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), an international development agency. TPS, Serena Hotels has expanded from 4 units in the early 1970s to a collection of 25 luxury hotels, resorts, camps and safari lodges offering quality accommodation in 6 Countries in Africa (Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda and Rwanda).

Serena’s new Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp in Kenya

Serena Hotels opened a brand new 5 star tented safari camp in July 2011 in Kenya’s magnificent Soysambu Conservancy in the famous Great Rift Valley.  Located around 2-hours drive from Nairobi, this 48 000 acre, pristine wildlife sanctuary is home to many unique wildlife and bird species.  The camp comprises 24 tents and the exquisite Flamingo Suite all reflecting the understated elegance of a by-gone era and fringing the peaceful and serene Lake Elmenteita.  Activities include walking safaris, day and night game drives, cliff top sundowners, or the undisputed magic of watching birdlife from lakeside hides. Not to be missed experiences nearby include a visit to Kariendusi pre-historic archaeological site, a boat trip to view the hippos on neighbouring Lake Naivasha, a day trip into Lake Nakuru National Park with a delicious picnic or for the ultimate views of the Great Rift Valley  splash out and go hot-air ballooning. This camp would make an ideal Lakeside extension for those looking for a relaxing and tranquil retreat following a safari rather than the typical beach extension.  For more info please visit www.serenahotels.com. Introducing Serena’s new Sales & Marketing Director

We are delighted to announce that Rosemary Mugambi was recently (1 November) promoted from Group Sales Manager to Sales and Marketing Director – the first lady to hold this position.  We wish outgoing Michael Opondo well in his new venture and look forward to working closely with Rosemary in her new role.

Rosemary is a well-known member of the Serena family having been with the company for 23 years!  Back then Serena Hotels had just 5 hotels in Kenya – a far cry from its 25 properties in no less than 5 countries today.  Rosemary joined as a management trainee after graduating from Hotel School (Hotel Management) and has a wealth of experience in many different roles - giving her an invaluable understanding of the industry.  Rosemary was the first-ever lady lodge Manager for Serena (based at Samburu Serena Safari Lodge) which she describes as “The most exciting years of my life with enough experiences to fill a book if I ever get round to writing one”.  She was also based at the flagship Serena Beach Hotel & Spa where she held various positions including Human Resources Manager/ Food and Beverages Manager and Rooms Division Manager.  She then moved to Head Office in July 2007 and has held the position of Group Sales Manager until now. Rosemary feels that her biggest achievement is “being part of the team that has moved Serena from being Serena Kenya with 5 properties to the premier hotel group in the region, yet the growth has not affected the consistency in quality of product and service”.

Motswari ‘s Bush Blog - Timbavati

If you have a passion for wildlife and would like to start your day with a dose of bush news with your daily coffee - be sure to follow the popular Motswari blog!  I know we may be slightly biased but it is honestly one of the best blogs we have come across!  One of South Africa's jewels nestled within the Timbavati Nature Reserve, this family-owned and operated four-star luxury safari lodge prides itself on its warm atmosphere and luxurious African safari lodge accommodation. But it’s the “local residents” who are the real attraction! Thanks to Ranger Chad for sharing this fantastic photo - it was agony trying to pick my favourite!
