Spotted in Cape Town – Eric Lanlard #BakingMad at Steenberg
Steenberg, the award winning hotel on its own wine estate based on the oldest farm in Constantia Cape Town, celebrated “World Baking Day” in style this weekend by hosting Master Pâtissier and international celebrity chef Eric Lanlard from the hit television programmes “Baking Mad with Eric Lanlard” and “Glamour Puds”.
Eric Lanlard’s visit also coincided with the first ever Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Odyssey 2013, a sensory celebration of its signature cultivar – one of the top white wines in the country. The tutored tasting led by resident winemaker JD Pretorius incorporated 15 National and International wines paired and complemented by a sumptuous 5-course lunch at the elegant Catharina's, Steenberg’s acclaimed fine dining restaurant.
A select group of foodie media were then treated to a decadent brunch on Monday morning, prepared in Eric’s magnificent Cape Colonial Heritage Suite – essentially his own kitchen during his stay at Steenberg!
The breakfast cook-off included demonstrations of some of Steenberg’s most popular signature dishes including Eggs Benedict with home-made pork belly confit bacon prepared by Bistro Sixteen82's Chef Brad Ball and a Cape Malay omelette by Garth Almazan, the acclaimed Executive Chef from Catharina's. Meanwhile, Eric whipped up a batch of his Chocolate Hazelnut Muffins for the grand finale.
Eric is currently attending the Good Food & Wine show in Cape Town and launching his new recipe book Chocolat and tweeted during his stay saying “Perfect start to the day … beautiful sunshine, breakfast outside with the best egg Benedict ever … @SteenbergHotel”.
Eric has worked with some of the world’s top chefs including being recruited by the renowned Roux Brothers in 1989 after leaving the French Navy and working his way up to their Head Pastry Chef. He then opened Laboratoire 2000, which was replaced by his shop Cake Boy in Battersea Reach in 2005, which is both a cookery school and the premises for his custom cake business Savoir Design. Among Lanlard's publicised works are a croquembouche for the wedding of Madonna and Guy Ritchie, and wedding cakes for Elizabeth Hurley and Claudia Schiffer; as well as both the first birthday cake of Brooklyn Beckham, son of David Beckham, and the cake for the Queen Mother's 101st birthday which featured two Corgis wearing tiaras. He has twice been named Continental Patissier of the Year at the British Baking Awards and will soon become the first chef to travel to space with Virgin Galactic. Eric also has his own television shows on Channel 4 namely, Glamour Puds and Baking Mad with Eric Lanlard. Baking Mad 2 launches on South African TV on BBC Lifestyle in June 2013.
