THE ZULU ROUTE TAKES ROOT
The Zulu Route welcomes 2 new properties
We are delighted to welcome two new properties, Tembe Elephant Park and Umkhumbi Lodge onto The Zulu Route (www.zuluroute.com/@Zuluroute) in KwaZulu-Natal, joining the likes of Ghost Mountain Inn, Cathedral Peak Hotel, Fordoun Spa Hotel, Isandlwana Lodge, Pakamisa Private Game Reserve, Amakhosi Safari Lodge and Thula Thula Private Game Reserve.
Tembe Elephant Park , located between Zululand and Mozambique, is a “Big 5” game reserve offering 300 square kilometres of pristine African wilderness that comprises rare sandforest, pans, wetlands and open grassy plains. It is home to over 300 of KwaZulu-Natal’s indigenous elephants and some the largest tuskers you will find anywhere. Tembe Safari Lodge is very unique – it’s the only community-owned full-service game lodge inside a proclaimed game reserve. It offers luxury semi-tented accommodation made with wood and canvas that blend seamlessly into the surrounding sandforest. All 14 suites offer ensuite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor bush showers. The park is very exclusive and one rarely encounters another vehicle as only 10 4x4 vehicles are allowed access per day. Mahlasela Hide is a popular spot for both guests and game – offering fantastic sightings which can also be viewed on the live webcam on www.tembe.co.za
Umkhumbi Lodge is an authentic bush lodge in the heart of Zululand surrounded by a private nature reserve with easy access to a number of surrounding game reserves including the famous Hluhluwe-Imfolozi – as well as the Isimangaliso Wetland Park (World Heritage Site) and the white sandy beaches of the Elephant Coast, so it is an ideal base for families and small groups. Nestled in the peaceful forest are six very private double units, each with two spacious en suite, air-conditioned rooms, connected by inter-leading doors, making them perfect for families. Sliding glass doors lead onto a generous verandah, surrounded by trees, with the odd duiker wandering past and birds flitting in and out of the bush. The lodge is owned and run by the Roberts family and facilities include a double storey ‘lapa’ where guests can relax upstairs in the lounge and sip sundowners in the Umkhumbi Bar and enjoy meals and a camp fire below. There is also a pool for a refreshing dip after a long day under the African sun be it on Big-5 game drives, whale watching, turtle hatching, elephant, cheetah or crocodile encounters - which are all within easy reach of Umkhumbi (meaning red duiker). Guests can also visit Amangwane - a community owned camp 2 hours away at Kosi bay for the day or even overnight there to experience the warm hospitality and the various activities on offer; Thonga fish traps, snorkelling in the Estuary, kayaking or just enjoy the pristine beaches.
WHAT IS THE ZULU ROUTE?
The Zulu Route and its interactivemap-based website is both a branding initiative and training and information online tool that has been developed to help both consumers and travel agents package up some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most authentic African experiences, properties and tourist attractions for tailor-made self-drive holidays. It equips users with the the confidence, skills and tools to either create their own itinerary from scratch – or they can choose from a number of “ready to go” itineraries suggested depending on their needs – from an action packaged affordable family-friendly holiday to a “no expense spared” luxury honeymoon. Suggested itineraries currently include “The Real Africa”, “Zulu Highlights”, “Family Friendly”, “Romantic Break”, “The Wild Side” and “Zulu Discovery” – but more are being added as the portfolio grows. Would-be visitors can then choose to book direct - or through their preferred travel agent or tour operator with all the assurances, insurances and peace of mind dealing with an expert brings. A little like the popular “Garden Route” in the Cape, but with a Zulu twist … The Zulu Route is an area of South Africa dotted with numerous hotels, B&B’s and game lodges that are ideally located for exploring this diverse province and its many attractions. Highlights include the many game reserves, the Drakensberg mountains, the sandy white beaches, world-class dive spots, historical Battlefields and the amazing Zulu culture that runs throughout and gives you an authentic taste of the real Africa and allows you to explore a little off the beaten track by putting both popular and little known gems ON THE MAP – both literally and figuratively!
