WHATS ON IN JUNE? NAME THAT BABY GORILLA

The 10th Annual "Kwita Izina" Gorilla Naming Ceremony will be held on 21 June in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park

Every year in June Rwanda’s President (or a senior government official), all local park rangers and a handful of lucky tourists gather for a ceremony called "Kwita Izina" where each newborn gorilla born that year is named.

The 10th Annual “Kwita Izina” will be held on 21 June 2014 at Volcanoes National Park where names will be given to 16 new babies. The theme for this year is ‘Conserving – Empowering – Growing’.

Rwanda has more than double Uganda’s habituated mountain gorilla groups - currently home to 7 families that can be tracked, namely the Susa, Sabinyo, Amahoro, Umubano, Hirwa, Kwitonda and Group Thirteen.  The ceremony's main purpose is to make it easier to identify and monitor each individual gorilla and their groups in their natural habitat as well as highlight the plight of the endangered mountain gorillas and their habitats in the Virunga mountain range.  The good news is that the conservation efforts are working - Rwanda has seen a 26,3% growth in the population since the last census in 2003.
