ZULU HIGHLIGHTS WITH VISIONS

Report this content

Ever heard of the Zulu Route?  It’s a bit like the Garden Route in South Africa – but with a Zulu twist!  It’s a region in South Africa offering immense natural beauty and a wide variety of highlights and tourist attractions all within easy driving distance of one another – so perfect for a self drive holiday.

The Zulu Route is a collection of like-minded properties in KwaZulu-natal, South Africa, who share similar ethos and authenticity – accessible via an interactive website that allows you to either tailor-make your perfect holiday from scratch based on the information supplied and the member properties listed – or print off a “ready to go” itinerary to book direct/via your travel specialist.

The Zulu Route encourages would be visitors to explore a little “off the beaten track” in an area that offers an authentic African experience - including walking majestic mountains, listening to captivating story-telling and going on both land and ocean safaris to view Africa's wildlife, including the Big 5 and some of Africa’s biggest tuskers!  Not to mention miles of white sandy beaches and some of the world’s best diving sites in warm tropical waters  and year-round sunshine!

The Zulu Route has recently launched a brand new itinerary incorporating some of our newer members called Zulu Highlights.  You fly into Durban, gateway to KwaZulu-Natal and head straight for the Drakensberg Mountains.  You will stay for 3 nights at The Cavern, an idyllic family run resort –playground for the whole family including guided hikes, horse riding, refreshing rock pool and Forest spa.  A 3-hour drive will find you in the remote Anglo-Zulu battlefields at Isandlwana Lodge for 2 nights.  Even those with only a mild interest in history will find themselves captivated by the fascinating tales of this great conflict between Britain, the Boers and the proud Zulus (It’s also the 50th anniversary of the movie “Zulu”) - and the guided walk down to the rural Zulu village is as un-touristy and authentic as Africa gets!  Then it’s a 4-hour scenic drive over the Lebombo Mountains  to Tembe Elephant Park - home to the Big 5 game including some of Africa’s largest tuskers (for a taster visit the ellie cam on www.tembe.co.za). Accommodation for 3 nights is in luxurious tents with meals served under the stars. Your "Zulu Highlights" Adventure ends with 2 nights at Umkhumbi Lodge   - the ideal location to chill out and explore the surrounding Isimagaliso Wetland Park and the breathtaking beaches of the Elephant Coast including the Kosi Bay Estuary.  You can also enjoy diving, fishing, kayacking, sunset boat cruises on Lake St Lucia (hippo and croc spotting) or even whale watching and turtle hatching trips (seasonal).
