New DNSSEC management service for .eu registrars

Brussels, 16 November 2011 – EURid, the .eu top-level domain registry, has launched a new service for registrars that greatly simplifies signing and managing .eu domain names enabled for the Internet security protocol Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).

The .eu DNSSEC Signing Service automatically signs .eu domain names and maintains re-signing and key rollovers. This management aspect of the service removes much of the complexity and administrative work often associated with implementing the DNSSEC protocol.

“At .eu, we encourage the adoption of DNSSEC and our new .eu DNSSEC Signing Service means that registrars can now easily offer enhanced security to their .eu customers,” said Marc Van Wesemael, EURid’s General Manager. “With this new service, we expect that more registrars will implement DNSSEC and sign more .eu domain names, which will benefit everyone who uses .eu and improve the collective security of the .eu top-level domain.”

After subscribing to the service, .eu accredited registrars can select which .eu domain names are to be DNSSEC-enabled and then the .eu DNSSEC Signing Service takes care of the rest.

.eu and DNSSEC

DNSSEC is an online security protocol that reduces the chance that visitors to a DNSSEC-protected website are led to fake websites and tricked into supplying personal information if they type the protected website’s address into their browsers.

DNSSEC adds security to the Domain Name System (DNS) by verifying and validating name server responses from the bottom up through a chain of trust, thereby making the DNS more secure. Digital signatures are attached to DNS data – a process known as signing – so the origin and integrity of this data can be verified as it crosses the Internet.

The .eu top-level domain has been fully DNSSEC enabled since September 2010.
