Europolitan awarded UMTS license Europolitan has been awarded a UMTS license to operate a 3G mobile telecoms network. News of the license award was released by the Swedish National Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) on Saturday. "We are naturally delighted," says Jon Risfelt, MD of Europolitan. "At the same time, the decision was pretty much a foregone conclusion, since we submitted a very strong and extremely well- planned application. Our plans now are to be one of the first operators in the world to have UMTS base stations up and running in the first half of 2001. We are backed by the world's largest mobile telecoms operator, Vodafone, and our track record demonstrates that Europolitan is a global leader in terms of putting new mobile telephony technology into operation. We also have well- defined UMTS expansion plans. This is proof that we have the power to carry through on our plans," he continues. Amongst other things, Europolitan has drawn up letters of intent with both Nokia and Ericsson regarding the delivery of equipment for UMTS systems. "The rapid and extensive expansion of the UMTS networks will mean that everyone in Sweden will have access at an early stage to mobile services that simplify their everyday lives. It also means that Sweden will be able to consolidate its position as the world's leading IT nation," concludes Jon Risfelt. Europolitan AB is a Swedish GSM operator that prioritises service and quality. The company's head office is in Karlskrona, Sweden.
