Karlskrona, 28 June 2000 Europolitan first off the mark with roaming for positioning services On 27 June in Karlskrona, Europolitan, in collaboration with Kipling, held a demonstration of a new roaming system for GSM positioning. A large number of international operators attended the demonstration, showing that Europolitan is once again first off the mark with the introduction of a new GSM service. Roaming between various mobile operators in different countries is today a standard service for GSM subscribers, but the function has never been used for positioning services - until now. Europolitan and another international operator have in collaboration with Europolitan's systems supplier, Kipling, developed a system where subscribers in Sweden can use Europolitan's positioning service in another country, and vice versa. The roaming system uses positioning data from the two GSM networks, and switches smoothly from Europolitan's network to the foreign network whenever the sender, i.e. a GSM telephone, crosses the border. This means that a haulage contractor, for example, who uses Europolitan's positioning service to manage a vehicle fleet in Sweden, can now also keep track of it abroad. The new roaming service provides yet another illustration of Europolitan's leading position when it comes to developing new GSM services. The demonstration of this unique new service in Karlskrona on Tuesday gathered 13 operators from the Vodaphone AirTouch group. "The considerable interest shown in our new positioning service demonstrates that Europolitan is a world leader in a large number of different fields connected with the development of new mobile communication services," says Magnus Forsbrand, Vice President, Engineering at Europolitan. "Our international collaboration, together with the fact that we are part of the world's largest group of mobile operators, also allow our working partners - in this case Kipling - to demonstrate their skills to international operators. Their working partnership with Europolitan provides them with a springboard to the international market," says Robert Nilsson, Marketing Director at Europolitan. Europolitan is an international reference customer for Kipling's positioning systems, as agreed earlier this year. "Having one of the world's leading operators as a partner and requirement specifier is crucial to building up advanced telecoms systems. We have now shown that we are together spearheading the development of mobile services," says Gustaf Ekberg, CEO of Kipling. Europolitan AB is a Swedish GSM operator that prioritizes service and quality. The company's head office is in Karlskrona, Sweden. Europolitan is a leader in the field of technically advanced services for GSM 900/1800.
